Sting is an Elven short sword forged in Gondolin during the First Age. Originally discovered by Bilbo Baggins in a troll hoard, it became the perfect weapon for a Hobbit on the Quest for Erebor. Bilbo later had the blade engraved in Sindarin with “Maegnas aen estar nin dagnir in yngyl im,” meaning, “Sting is my name, I am the spider’s bane.” The sword was later carried by Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee throughout the events of The Lord of the Rings. Known for its sharp, piercing design—reflected in the Sindarin root maeg—Sting famously glows blue in the presence of orcs or goblins.
